adventures in japan, pt. i

note 1: i will include links to pictures throughout, enclosed by “[” and “]”. be sure to check these out for the full experience! note 2: this will be in nine(!) parts, because it is too long to post as one blogger entry (they must have put a new size limit in the new blogger version). but, i will post them backwards, so that part 1 appears first, and part 2 second, and part 3 third, and so on. in other words, read in the order they appear on the page. note 3: this will be very long. in fact, it is about 7800 words and took me upwards of 5 hours to write. but i haven’t made you read anything in a while anyway, so suck it up. and who knows, maybe it will actually be worth reading! part i: preparation ...

back from japan

i am alive! (all appearances to the contrary notwithstanding…) and i am back from japan. it was a great trip, and i have great stories and great pictures to share. unfortunately, i took the latter half of last week to do just about everything except blog, and now i have started working full-time. still, with japan and other recent events, so many exciting things are happening in my world at this time that i can’t afford to leave you out of the loop. look for some real posts soon, in which i will document all said awesomeness. ...

summer reading list

today i finished my last final paper for spring 2003. i’m free! until september. thus, i will now present to you my somewhat-ambitious reading list for the summer 2003, in no particular order: 1. the chronicles of narnia, c.s. lewis. it’s been awhile since i’ve read these, and i picked up a beautifully illustrated hardback version. 2. christianity and the nature of science, j.p. moreland. pretty decent phlosophy. i started this one last year sometime and it’s been collecting dust. time to put it to rest for good. ...

mixed good feelings

i lied. this entry will not be stunning prose either. i just had to say goodbye to stanford 2002-2003. it was a fun year. it saw a lot of changes in my life. a lot of changes in who i am. i’m not sure if i like all of them yet, so i may not be keeping them. although the ridding of them may be more difficult than i might think. ...

standard updates

since gems of pure literary genius do not seem to be forthcoming any time soon, why don’t i take this time and give a few highlights of what’s been going on? 1. school - today was my last day of classes. before i am officially done with the quarter, however, i must successfully complete one logic final (all questions of which having to do with godel’s incompleteness theorems), and write two papers, one for philosophy of quantum mechanics (this paper will be on whether or not the quantum logic interpretation of quantum theory has a solution to the measurement problem), and one for my seminar on intentionality (this paper will be on whether or not there is a plausible way to naturalize the semantics of words referring to uninstantiated properties, like that of being a unicorn). assuming i can get all these done by next week, i will officially be a 4th-year undergraduate student and a 2nd-year graduate student! ...

self-indulgence via the past

tonight i felt melancholy, and too tired to go to bed. you see, i spent the bulk of the night at malibu grand prix, where i spent dollars and dollars of other people’s money on house of the dead 2, jurassic park, star wars: pod racer, cruisin usa: exotica [?], and skee-ball. you might wonder (a) why i was at an arcade, (b) who i was there with, and (c) why i was spending other people’s money. these are all valid questions of course, but i don’t feel like answering them. ...

even little sisters grow up

last thursday i flew home. shortly after arriving at my house, i left again to see the matrix reloaded with my friends. it was a fantastic movie, and i’m still shuffling bits of it around in my head to construct a coherent plot structure. the few days after that were filled with parties. graduation parties, mostly, but i also attended one wedding (an outside wedding, on the grass, sunny, 95 degrees, and humid as a glass of water). the parties were also fun. at the first one i went to (my sister’s), i was able to run around with my brother outside in a terrific thunderstorm, tossing a frisbee. later on in that same thunderstorm duty found me on the roof, unclogging one of our gutters, and praying that if lightning decided to strike, it would go for something besides me. the rest of the party was spent gradually losing a game of chess to my good friend josh, and eating little croissant hot dogs or something. ...
