chronic disappointment

every day at work, i go into the break room, on average, three or four times. usually it’s to refill my 16-ounce styrofoam cup with the refreshing, ice cold water from the cooler. other times it might be to cook up a delicious rice bowl (“poke through plastic cover. microwave on high for 5 minutes. let stand for 1 minute. for best flavor, stir before eating”). i’ll even make the occasional cup of coffee.

something happens every time i go in there. i notice a cabinet which, i think to myself, i may not have discovered before. it’s off in the corner, so it wouldn’t be a surprise that i hadn’t come across it. on it there is a little label which reads, “snacks // extra supplies”. for a moment, when i see this, my heart stops beating. snacks! could it really be? could there be free snacks at work, which i could take back to my desk and eat? in a rush of joy i open the cabinet door to find…a couple salt shakers and a box of coffee filters.

in a sad, betrayed sort of way, i slowly close the door and stand for a second or two, drooping and defeated. my steps back to my desk are slow and somber. that cabinet lied to me, and about something so precious as snacks!

there’s a little glimpse of hell, i think, when you’re promised snacks and you get…salt.

in other news, altimar IV was fun! we hung out at the beach and played games for days straight. glorious. furthermore, chris’ mysterious utterance via the comment board on my last post should now be regarded as having been a prophetic utterance, and the of-ageness of 80% of our brethren did indeed play a part in our recreation.

well, david and rachel have now both gone off to school for the year, leaving me in orlando with just mom and dad. one and a half more weeks of work, and then my summer will also come to a close as i go off to europe and then to school!
